The Texans play host to the Chargers Sunday in a game that could be critical to the playoff hopes for each team. And yes: that's true even in early November.
The Texans, after a 2-0 start, stumbled at times through late September and October, then began November with a 30-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts this past Monday. That dropped the Texans out of first place in the AFC South for the first time this season, and given Indianapolis' history of hitting a stride in November - they haven't lost in the month since 2007 - a third Texans home loss of the season against a team many expect to contend for a playoff spot could be critical.
Houston, since jumping ahead of the Colts by 13 points in a season-opening victory, has shown a disturbing tendency to start slow. They have trailed early in five of their past six games, losing one-sided results to the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys, losing to the Colts after trailing 24-3 in the third quarter and rallying from double-digit victories to beat Washington and Kansas City.
Texans' Head coach Gary Kubiak said this week he was examining the reasons for the slow start, and a continued focus for the team is solving a pass defense that has struggled much of the season.
Both issues will be crucial this week against a Chargers team that many believe is more talented than its 3-5 record.
The Chargers enter the game ranked No. 1 in the NFL in total defense, total offense and passing yards, and San Diego needs to eliminate costly mistakes to make a second-half run.
